- Coastline orientation matters more than the destination’s general reputation. A beach can be world-famous and still face the wrong direction for sunset views — research the specific coastline’s orientation, not just the destination name.
- Elevation adds drama but isn’t required. Clifftop settings (Santorini, Big Sur, Uluwatu) offer more dramatic, unobstructed views, but plenty of flat beachfront properties on the right coastline deliver excellent sunsets too.
- Check room-specific view claims carefully. “Ocean view” doesn’t guarantee a sunset-facing room — read recent reviews or ask directly which specific rooms face the sunset, since not every room in a beachfront hotel necessarily does.
Booking Tips
- Request a specific room or floor when booking if sunset viewing is the priority — many hotels can accommodate this request, especially when booked directly rather than through a third party.
- Check the season. Sunset position shifts throughout the year, and some hotels’ “best” sunset months are seasonal rather than year-round — worth a quick search for “[hotel name] sunset season” if timing flexibility allows.
